Every action made on Social News, helps determine a story’s popularity and ranking. Each action has a factor in not only making the item reach the Frontpage but also allowing the site to determine and provide the type of content that is most desirable – one of our ultimate goals.
All submitted content is separated into two divisions: the Frontpage and the Backpage. Similar to a newspaper, the most popular or frequently read items are moved to the Frontpage while the less viewed items remain on the Backpage. However, any item may reach the Frontpage after it has accumulated enough activity (starring, views, and commenting). Wherever the item may be, you can continue to comment, view and star or unstar an item to move it up the list or back to the Backpage.
Starring or unstaring an item is one of the easiest ways to make an item popular; however, comments rack up a lot of points for the not only the item but the user as well. Each commenter is labeled with a comment hue. Their comment will display a background depending on their relation to you or the article. Comments can also be starred and covered up to help you get a sense of how the rest of the community feels.
